Cold Laser Therapy

Therapeutic cold lasers have been used in both human and veterinary medicine for several decades. Laser therapy provides patients with a holistic, non medical, effective treatment option for chronic and acute pain, injuries, and inflammatory conditions.

Cold laser provides an impulse of light at a specific wavelength to promote healing through reducing inflammation, swelling, bruising, and pain as well as assists in stimulating nerve function. It can be used as a multimodal approach in treating a variety of soft tissue and orthopedic conditions. These include the following:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Degenerative joint disease

  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)

  • Sprains/strains

  • Wounds

  • Otitis (ear infections)

  • Dental disease

  • Gingivitis

  • Dermatologic (skin) conditions

  • Anal Gland Inflammation

  • Perianal Fistulas

  • Trauma injuries

  • Edema/swelling

  • Asthma

  • Many other disease processes

At Gilbertsville Veterinary Hospital, we believe that it is essential to reduce pain and improve the healing process after each surgical procedure . Researchers have found that, “Laser therapy can reduce healing times by 30%-50%”[Summus Medical Laser]. This is why we have started to implement noninvasive laser therapy after each surgery, except for potential cancerous mass removal procedures.

How do I know if laser is right for my pet?

Your veterinarian will discuss the options of treating your pet’s condition with you and if she/he believes laser therapy will be beneficial. Depending on the appointment time and schedule, the laser therapy procedure may be performed the same day. In order for the laser to be most effective, it is often recommended for multiple sessions to be performed. Your veterinarian will write up a specific and detailed protocol for your pet which outlines the treatment plan. If other sessions are needed, these can be scheduled as a technician appointment. Please feel free to ask about our packaged laser therapy bundles as this may be most cost effective and beneficial.

How is laser performed?

When laser therapy is performed, you are able to stay with your pet during the entire procedure (unless during surgery/dentistry). Depending on the condition being treated, sessions can range from a few minutes up to a half hour. Both humans and pets will wear special eye protection as the laser is being performed over the affected area.

How can I schedule an appointment?
